Six Reasons to Choose a Wool Rug

Are you on the hunt for an area rug to complete your room or hallway? With so many options on the market, it can be hard to decide which type of rug is best for your space. Material, composition and construction matter, and are arguably more important than the actual design of the rug.

Luckily, we’ve done the hard work for you.

Here are six reasons you’ll want your next rug to be made of wool.

1. Wool is strong.

Due to a unique, naturally rough surface structure, wool fibers are stronger and more durable than synthetic fibers.

These fibers are hard to damage, and wool items have been shown to last decades if properly cared for. This is due to the fibers’ natural elasticity and flexibility. A wool fiber can be bent more than 20,000 times without breaking, as compared to 3,000 times for a cotton fiber and even less for silk.

2. Wool fibers hold color incredibly well.

Wool fibers absorb and maintain vibrant colors that are fade-resistant and durable. This is due to the fibers’ structure and absorption qualities.

These bold colors will last much longer than in other synthetic materials, and as a whole the rug will age much less noticeably than competing materials – even in direct sunlight.

3. Wool thermo-regulates better than other materials.

Wool is able to heat and cool better than a synthetic material- thus making for a great area rug appropriate for all four seasons.

Air is trapped in between the wools fibers, which allows for heat and/or moisture to pass through more easily. As a result, wool rugs are perfect insulators and very cozy in the colder months, but also work well in hotter temperatures during the summer months.

4. Wool is naturally stain and odor repellant.

Having a rug with natural stain resistance is a plus, as spills and messes are common. Wool can soak up to 30% of its’ weight before feeling wet, and as a result, dirt and debris rest on the top of the fibers- thus saving your rug from permanent damage.

Clean up is easy and quick, and if done properly, can increase the lifespan of your wool rug.

This, in turn, also bodes well for odor reduction, as the dirt and mess stay on the surface of the rug, which makes it easier to clean up.

5. Wool is a natural flame retardant.

Wool is fire resistant, which make it both unique and practical for a household item. If caught in a flame, wool will burn very slowly and smolder, essentially self- extinguishing the burn… instead of bursting into flames like other competing materials. This, in turn, is a safer option to other types of rugs.

Due to the structure of the fibers, wool is less likely to catch aflame, and requires a much higher temperature to ignite in the first place. Because wool absorbs moisture well, the high water content helps resist flames and/or sparks that come from fireplaces, candles and wood stoves.

6. Wool is environmentally- friendly and sustainable.

Wool is one of the most sustainable and eco-friendly options on the market.

100% renewable, natural and biodegradable, wool has long been accepted as the environmentally positive choice for both garments and household items.
